The last time I was at J. Nichols was in 2013. I could not remember what I had but I did remember that service was bad. See my last blog: http://solittlethyme.blogspot.com/2013/05/j-nichols-kitchen.html
We ended up there last week since it was close to my brother's place. My mom, Sandi and I thought we would experiment and have dinner there. My mom ordered the Rasputin beer; dark and eerie like what you would expect with a name like Rasputin. She thought it was good. Sandi and I had a sip and we both thought it was nasty. We settled for a diet coke instead.
My mom ordered the Grilled Cheese with Tomato Basil Soup. She liked it but didn't think it had enough ooomph since the fontina and the white cheddar was not sharp enough for her taste. Sandi and I decided to split the West L.A. Burger with bacon balsamic compote, Gruyere cheese, arugula, lemon aioli on a French baguette. We also ordered a side of Maple Bacon Roasted Brussels Sprouts. We got our burger and didn't get the B.S. We could not find our server so I managed to flag the hostess to check on our order. She said she would find out. Minutes passed by and nothing happened, meanwhile we tried to slow down on our burger since we wanted to have the sprouts with it. I could not find our waiter so I just flagged another one who promptly came to ask what he could do. I told him we had ordered a side and we expected it to come the same time as the burger. He apologized and offered not to charge us. When we were almost done with the burger, it finally arrived. That was almost dessert!
After all that waiting, the Brussels sprouts turned out to be a disappointment. Most of them were undercooked, only the little ones were cooked right. We consumed about 4 sprouts and left the rest. Our waiter was clueless even after seeing that we hardly touched the sprouts. A good place would have asked if there was a problem or could they get anything else. After the lousy service, we did not even want to look at the dessert menu.
We got the bill and they did not make any adjustments. It was the most expensive Brussels sprout ever, $8.50 for the 4 pieces we consumed! Needless to say, this was the last time we all set our pretty feet at J. Nichols.
