Superba Food and Bread

Gary and I took our mom to the airport Sunday for her flight back to the Philippines. She had 2 baggages which were allowed on this business class flight. What we found out was not all business class is created equal. The "discounted rate" of $3,475 only allowed for 50lbs each suitcase instead of the 70lbs.  We told our mom to pray they won't notice or just let it go. I didn't leave anything to chance so I brought a carry on bag she could take along just in case.

When she checked in, they asked her the usual questions like; "did you pack your bags yourself " to which she answered " yes" and "did anyone hand you anything" to which she answered; " uhh, just a grenade". Gary and I were totally shocked and yelled at her for trying to be funny. We explained that one gets arrested for making statements like that. Luckily, the young Filipino agent just smiled as we did the scolding for him. Our 86 year old mom was shocked as well as she probably thought we were just making a big deal out of a little joke. Back to the luggages....they were definitely overweight. We were there 3 hrs. prior to her flight so we had time to open both suitcases and literally unload clothes, big bottles of vitamins, etc. bottles of Parmesan cheese. She had big chunks of cheeses and a bunch of salami so we put that in her (or in my) carry on bag. We wrapped the bottles in one of her robes and tied it in a ball. The plan was for me to ship the stuff via balikbayan box. For people who do not know what that is; it is a big box that can be shipped to the Philippines regardless of weight for $60.

Gary and I said our goodbyes as a lady took our mom via wheelchair to the lounge. We left the airport with the clothes and miscellaneous stuff. We looked like a couple of homeless people.

The whole experience made us very hungry. It was 8 a.m. Gary thought we should try Superba Food and Bread on Lincoln Blvd. near his house. Cute place. I went straight to the display of an array of pasties, quiches, etc. Nothing looked appetizing to me so I decided to order from their regular menu. The Cheesy Soft Scrambled Eggs with scallions sounded good.  It was served on their sourdough homemade bread.  It was very good.

Gary went back to look at the pastries and came back to announce that he was going to order the bacon cheese scone and the nectarine tart. I immediately thought he made the wrong decision when it was delivered to our table. I could tell the taste just from looking at them. The scone was dry as can be. In fact, it looked and tasted like it was 3 days old. Gary could not even taste the cheese nor the bacon. The nectarine was equally dry except maybe the middle, which had the nectarines that were on the sour side.

He was hungry but could not finish any of them. The server came and asked if everything was satisfactory. She offered to get him something else and he declined. The reason he declined was there was not anything else that looked better than the 2 things he ordered. We both agreed that their coffee was not even that good.

I guess we are just spoiled. We are used to the scones of L'Amande Bakery (Beverly Hills and Torrance)  which are superior. Their pastries are just like the ones you would find in Paris (the very good bakeries as not all bakeries are equal).

Gary has been to the Superba Snack Bar in Venice and he liked the food. This Superba Food and Bread on Lincoln failed to impress us.  They should maybe stick to their regular menu, their bread, improve their coffee and get rid of the dry stuff!
