; krust

; krust is a bakery that's new to me though it has been in operation for almost two years. I cannot believe I have not heard about this bakery until the other day when Piero and I were talking about bakeries. He asked me about Pinwheel, the bakery that took over the space of the former L'amande Bakery. I told him that it was a big disappointment to me and my friends. So he started googling (is that a correct term?) He then asked if I've heard of krust which has very good reviews. We started oohing, awing and salivating just looking at the pictures.

Sandi and I were on a mission to check out this bakery. We drove there on a Monday after the gym and realized half way there that they are closed on Mondays. We couldn't wait till Tuesday. Right after the gym, we drove there and discovered they open at 7:00 a.m. and are open till 3:00  p.m. I like bakeries that open early. The place was small but very cozy. They don't have a big variety but that's o.k. What they do have is very good pastries.

The best thing I have tried so far is the Lemon Glazed Donut. It does not have a filling but the glaze is very lemony and the donut itself is what a typical donut should be: light. It has just the right amount of sweetness. Sandi had a Cinnamon Scone which she liked but she thought it would be better served warm. It was not served with butter so I asked for butter and it immediately got better. I also bought an Almond Croissant for us to split. Boy, was that good. They make their croissants right; not limp or burnt but nice and crisp outside and flaky. The almond paste was delicious, again not too sweet.

Today, Amy and Nako accompanied me to the the bakery right after our workout at the gym. This time I wanted to try the Custard Filled Donut and couldn't leave without a Lemon Glazed Donut. I also bought a Mocha Bun to try. The custard filled donut was very good and so was the lemon glazed donut. That is still my favorite; you just can't beat it. The mocha bun did not excite me. It had lots of raisins but it would probably be better for people that don't like sweets.

Amy who never gets excited over breakfast had the Hazelnut Croissant and absolutely loved it. Surprisingly, she ate the whole thing. Nako had the Cinnamon Sugar Donut and a Custard filled Donut. Nako was a very happy camper and bought more to take home. When we were just about done, Chef Yun asked if we would like to try the baguette. Of course we did; it was warm since it just came out of the oven. We each received a slice with butter and topped with sea salt. Ohhhhh myyy, unbelievable!!

Piero, the friend that demanded a Finder's fee for discovering this bakery wanted me to get him a Lemon Glazed Donut for the next time I see him. The problem is he is only in the area on Mondays and they are closed on Mondays. I asked the Chef and owner Yonghee if it would still be good on Monday if I bought it on Sunday and she said no. So, Piero will have to wait......

;krust is located at 1300 S. Pacific Coast Hwy. in Redondo Beach, California. The cross street is Ave. E and it's across from Arby's.
